No More Google Reader???

When I heard that Google was doing away with Google Reader, I was shocked. Disappointed. Scared. I read tons of blogs in my Google Reader! What will I do?

I immediately googled what readers would be a good replacement for Google Reader. I read this and this and this. I had also heard that Bloglovin is a good reader. After much perusal, I decided to go with Feedly.

Feedly can give you a variety of ways to view the blogs that you read. Here is the way that is similar to Google Reader. It can expand the whole post in the feeder. Another cool thing about Feedly is that you can add it to your toolbar for easy access.

Here is Feedly with the “tiled” layout. You get a snapshot of each blog post in your feeder.

Another good thing about Feedly is that there is an app for your iphone and you reader Feedly on Kindles!

It is easy to import your blogs from Google Reader into Feedly. Just a click of a button. And Feedly is ready to take over your feeds when Google Reader disappears on July 1, 2013.

So have you decided what Reader you are going to move to (if you are currently using Google Reader)?

Friday Fun

Today is my last Friday off for the summer. Next week we go back to regular hours. While I won’t miss the long work days, I will miss my free day all to myself. So here is just a bunch of “stuff” that I think are fun:

I’m featured today on Mary Vee’s blog. She is a fellow Alley Cat at The Writer’s Alley and I absolutely LOVE her! You can check it out here: Mary Vee’s Friday Feature

I got crafty a couple of weeks ago and made a couple of items for my “adopted” grandson-to-be. I found a burlap bag at Hobby Lobby and decided to “dress it up”. Then I mod podged a plaque with scrapbook paper, then using wooden letters, put the baby’s name on it. They turned out okay.

So today I am going to be lazy, read, watch movies, and be selfish with my last free day.

What do you have planned for the weekend? Anything fun?

Copyright Issues

Bloggers need to be aware of copyright issues. In fact, you need to be very careful. I’ve learned the hard way. I’ve found pictures mainly by googling the topic I’m writing about and then looking at the image search. Well, I found out that is the wrong thing to do. I’ve been contacted by the artist of a picture that I used and if I can’t get it to quit showing in Google’s cache image search by today, I will be added to a list of people this person is taking legal action against.

Last Friday, I deleted the photo in the post, as well as in another post from my group blog. I’ve deleted the photo on my hard drive and downloads. I have deleted the photo in Google+ cache and in Picasa Albums (all google products linked to blogger) I have even sent Google a request to remove the photo from their image search. But I don’t know that it will be done by today.

Since this happened, I went through all my photos in my blogs, hard drive, Picasa, Google, etc and deleted ALL photos that I do not have rights to. I am trying to do what is right.

All this has got me thinking, what about Pinterest? What about You Tube? If it is not legal to use other people’s pictures, then how do these sites keep track of the legalities? I don’t get it.

Another thing that is bugging me. As I was researching how to get that photo completely deleted, I realized how interconnected things are. Blogger is connected to Google, and Picasa, and Google+. I had no idea Google+ kept a cache of all the pictures I use in my blog posts that I post in Google+. It’s crazy. And it makes me just a bit reticent to blog.

Anyway, just wanted to share what I’ve been learning….the hard way.

p.s. The picture is no longer showing up! Thank goodness!

Sherrinda It Is

Is anyone having trouble seeing the title of my blog? It wasn’t showing up for Katie, so we shall see if it magicically appears today. If you can see it, what do you think?

I thought putting a poll on my blog would clearly show what title to use for my blog. Boy, was I wrong! If anything, I was more confused. All my cyber friends gave me so many things to think about and there were several great ideas.

Kristi, everyone seemed to like your idea and I thought it was very ketchy…er, catchy. But I decided not to use it for two reasons. One, I don’t know that I will use a pen name. I suppose I will wait to decide when I get some professional advice. Who knows…maybe my big ol’ name will be okay to use. And two, to make Ketch plural might be confusing. It would look like my name is Sherrinda Ketches. I’d hate to introduce myself and everyone go…”What? What do you catch?” Funny, huh?
So I decided to just go with Sherrinda with a tag line. I felt “Her Write of Passage” really spoke to my heart and symbolized where I was on this writing journey. Most rite of passages involve some kind of ritual ceremony that marks a person’s passage from one status to another. I feel like I have passed through another phase of my journey, having written a full length novel.

I know there will be other passages I will travel through and each one will mark yet another stage in this writing trek. I’ll celebrate each and every one, and invite everyone to party with me…cyber-style.

What passages have you gone through and how have you celebrated?

No More Writer Wannabe?

I’ve been thinking for a quite awhile about renaming my blog. When I started the blog, I was just beginning my writing journey, wanting to write, but not sure I could really do it. I was a Writer Wannabe. Now that I have spent two years writing and have finished a book, I feel like I am no longer a wannabe.

I am a writer.

Now I am an Author Wannabe. But seriously, that is kind of a lame blog name, isn’t? I’ve debated using my whole name, but it is long and it is weird, and I think it might be too much of a mouthful for normal consumption. Besides, if…no, when I get published, I don’t know that my name would fit across the cover. (LOL) I’ve thought about shortening it, but then I’ve heard some horror stories about using pen names.

So, I thought of using my first name with a tag line of some kind. My first name is unique enough that I think people might not get me confused with anyone else. I don’t know…have any of you met any other Sherrinda’s?

I’ve thought of a few new blog names and created a poll to see what my cyber friends think sounds best. The poll is in the right side bar. So take a moment and cast your vote! If you can think of something even better, leave it in the comment section.

I’m looking forward to what you think–even if you think I need to keep the title the same. That raises another question…should we change the names/titles of our blogs as we grow and change as writers/people? What do you think?
